Ethan’s brutally honest reply made all of them so angry that they started trembling.
“You…you’re asking to be killed!”
“You are the ones asking to be killed,” said Ethan. “Haven’t you already realized that Mr Cedric is just making use of all of you?”
“What do you mean?”
They exchanged glances when they saw that Ethan didn’t intend to fight them immediately. Then they turned back to stare at Ethan. They had no idea what he meant by that.
“These people were hypnotized by Mr Cedric. All of you knew that, right?”
Their faces paled.
They hadn’t noticed it earlier, but then they remembered that Mr Cedric did indeed have this sort of special power. If they hadn’t been controlled by him, then who would have been willing to take the huge risk of coming inside here?
“They were doomed to die sooner or later, but all of you here still have a chance,” said Ethan calmly.
“What do you mean by that?” asked one of them. “If you’re trying to sow discord, then forget it!”
“We’re bent on finding the Longevity Pond, so anyone who blocks our way will have to die!”
All the men were prepared to fight.
“Gosh, all of you are already so old. Why are all of you still so hot tempered?” Ethan laughed. “I’m sure Mr Cedric has already told you that if I die, none of you will be able to locate the Longevity Pond.”
“I’m the only one who can open this passageway. If you kill me, then you won’t be able to find the pond.”
“You…”
They were all too angry to even speak.
Didn’t that mean there was nothing they could do about Ethan?
Ethan could kill them but they couldn’t kill Ethan. No matter how angry they were, killing Ethan would be as good as killing themselves.
“Tell us what you want to do then. If you meant to kill us, I don’t think you would waste so much time talking to us,” said one of them as he stared at Ethan.
He felt that this whole thing was problematic to begin with.
Ethan’s words were clearly meant to turn them against Mr Cedric, and that’s why he said they had been used by Mr Cedric. But everybody knew deep inside that they were all making use of each other.
Without Mr Cedric, they wouldn’t be able to find the Longevity Pond either.
“I just wanted to warn you guys.” Ethan looked at all of them. “Have you already decided who will enter the Longevity Pond?”
“What do you mean by that? All of us are going in,” sneered one of them.
“That won’t do.” Ethan shook his head. “Only one person can enter the Longevity Pond, and only one person can use it at one time.”
WOONG.
Everyone was stunned and wondered if they had heard him wrongly.
“That’s impossible!” one of them immediately retorted. “That’s not possible! How could only one person get to use the Longevity Pond?”
“That’s right! The Longevity Pond is a very large body of water, so all of us can go in and attain longevity, no?”
“Stop trying to sow discord here!”
Ethan just laughed.
“I’m not lying to you. It’s true that only one person can use the Longevity Pond at one time. If you had woken up in turns, then you might still stand a chance. Otherwise, why was there a rumor back then for all of you to find a way to go into deep sleep?”
“That was precisely because the pond can only take one person at a time. It’s very obvious that Mr Cedric woke up a long time ago. So he’s not going to leave this opportunity to anybody else.”
“If he wants all of you dead, do you think he would suddenly feel sorry for you?”
Ethan’s words were like a needle that stabbed everyone’s heart deeply.
The more they thought about it, the more sense it made. Mr Cedric had treated them entirely like tools. Once he was done with them, he threw them away. Sometimes he even threw them away before they were done.
“I can tell you for sure that this Longevity Pond does exist,” said Ethan. “But as long as Mr Cedric is around, then none of you will stand a chance.”
“Not the slightest chance.”
All the men fell silent.
Ethan was right. As long as Mr Cedric was around, then they would definitely never get a chance. Mr Cedric would never allow any of them to get the pond, and none of them would allow the others to get it either.
Because letting someone else have it meant that they had to die!
